Richard Burgess Named Outstanding Graduate Faculty
Collins College of Business Graduate Programs students honor Dr. Richard Burgess for teaching excellence.
Collins College of Business Graduate Progras is proud to announce Professor Richard Burgess was chosen as Spring 2009 Outstanding Graduate Faculty. Burgess specializes in teaching financial management, capital budgeting and global portfolio management; he has been faculty at The University of Tulsa since 1980. Burgess is described by students as "the best of the best", "always trying to help students", and "accessible outside of class". Past honors include: Graduate Business Association Professor of the Year Award, FMA Professor of the Year Award, Mortar Board Professor and Mayo Excellence in Research Award. In spring of 2006, Dr. Burgess also received the University of Tulsa gold medal for Teaching Excellence.
"The Collins College of Business has outstanding and dedicated faculty at both the graduate and undergraduate level", said Burgess. "To be chosen as Spring 2009 Outstanding Graduate Faculty is quite an honor." A plaque honoring his commitment to education will reside in the Williams Student Services Center in Helmerich Hall.
The Outstanding Graduate Faculty Award was established by the Dean of the Collins College of Business this May to offer outstanding faculty recognition for upholding the University's reputation for excellence in graduate education. REcipients are selected by graduate business students and are honored at the Collins College of Business Graduate Programs semi-annual commencement dinner.

Options and Course Requirements
Corporate Finance Option - This option prepares students for careers involving functions such as analyzing mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures; financing firm growth; managing corporate investments; and determining the optimal allocation of a firm's assets. Areas of study include short-term financial assets, long-term financing and investment decisions, international finance, and risk management. Graduates are prepared for careers in both large corporations and entrepreneurial firms.
Investments and Portfolio Management Option - This option is for individuals seeking in-depth study of financial markets and an understanding of the market's role in developing the financial assets of corporations, mutual funds, and private investors. Students may participate in the management of a real portfolio valued at more than $1,550,000. With proper elective choices, the curriculum prepares students to take the CFA exam.
Risk Management Option - This option, housed in the Williams Risk Management Center, is designed for students with strong quantitative backgrounds who intend to pursue careers as risk managers. Professionals in this area use advanced mathematical models to analyze business risks and to determine courses of action that are within acceptable risk limits. Risk Management is one of the fastest-growing areas in finance.
Foundation courses - Students with prior course work may be eligible for waivers from one or more of the foundation courses, subject to transcript review, and/or proficiency exam.
Listed below are the foundation courses and the course requirements for each option. Each option requires six hours of elective courses.
